The story of the bear reservation begins in 2005, when the “Millions of Friends” Association signed on to become a partner with the Zarnesti City Hall and received the concession for the land necessary for the construction of the “Liberty” sanctuary, for a period of 49 years.
As per the world Society for the Protection of Animals joined these efforts for the project “Rescue the captive bears” – the largest project for the rescue, care and welfare of the brown bear in Europe.More than 116 bears were rescued from a life of nightmares, full of abuses, spent in tiny cages against the need for space for such animals, prisoners between rusty grates and cement under soles, instead of grass.
The Association’s efforts are recognized internationally, through the interest of the media companies, but also by naming the sanctuary as “The most ethical sanctuary in the world”, according to National Geographic.
